Ride Away 03:30
RIDE AWAY Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI) I am a bad outlaw, I must confess But when it comes to breakin' laws, I am the best At the end of the day I just leave a big mess And ride away, I ride away. Away, I ride away Jump on a fast horse and ride away Now, I'm no hero of the matinee I won't be courageous on your Saturday When you pin your hopes and dreams on me I'll just ride away, just ride away Away, I ride away Jump on a fast horse and ride away You can slam the barn door but the horses are out And the flames are rising but you just shout No one can can hear you or care about All the things you thought were right That's just ashes in the night As I ride away So I won the day and I got the prize And the landscape changed before your eyes And it never matters 'bout the dirty lies When I ride away, when I ride away Away, I ride away Jump on a fast horse and ride away If I ever sense they're gaining on me I kick up so much dust nobody can see If anyone tries to take this horse from me I'll kill the horse and run away Away, I'll run away I don't need a dang horse to get away

POCKETS FULL OF RAIN Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI) This is a very dark season The sky feels six feet off the ground There's so little light This is the longest night And the rain is fallin’ down CHORUS I've got pockets full of rain I just worry and complain Trade this heart full of pain For some pockets full of joy Yeah, the rain keeps pouring down It's the worst storm we've ever known Everyone says just stay home ‘Til the worst of it is done And the sun comes out again But I just feel like going walking Turn my collar to the wind Hat jammed down around my ears Drown out all these fears ‘Til I feel okay again CHORUS Find one little ray of sunshine And one little ray of hope Stand up for someone in need Manage one good deed Throw out one lifesaving rope CHORUS Take these pockets full of rain Turn them out and start again Turn this pain into a flame A heart and soul full of joy

(IT’S A) HORRIBLE WORLD Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI) All the news is terrible, it's worse than ever before The planet's screwed, it's nothing new But now there's another war And families flee, and cry, and bleed And nobody seems to care What's it for? CHORUS It's a horrible world It's a beautiful world We've just gotta live through It's unfair, and there's no fair There's only true A little family in Belgium took in a Little family from Homs The little boys play now everyday Like brothers they've always known And a town in Texas built tiny houses For homeless people with none And the sky is blue, and I love you What's it for? CHORUS Sometimes it's hard to ever believe We'll live through another day With the hateful words and the clashing swords And the creepy little ways The talking heads spin everything To make us buy more stuff But there's always love And shining stars in the night And people who do right CHORUS

THE SUNDAY ROAD Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI) The sun set early on this day Streaks of warm light on the road Snow piled high along the way On my way back home One long weekend in a two day span Friends and family gathered round All the memories I can stand I'm glad to go back home CHORUS This Sunday road Holds its beauty close So sweet it makes me cry All the way home We sang some of those old time songs Laughed and cried and held our words Never spoke of anything wrong Just spoke in glowing terms 'Cause that's what loving people do To leave a sweet taste at the end Shed the bitterness we've been through Fill our hearts with a dear friend CHORUS All the way home I cried for what “might have been” And “should've said” and “almost went” This Sunday road is blue and gold And blurred by many falling tears I'll travel this road until I'm old And love the sweet view through the years CHORUS

NOTHIN' SO BAD (IT CAN’T GET WORSE) Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI) I went to the dentist, said there's a hole in my tooth Went to fix it and then said there's trouble in the root Ain't nothin' bad enough it can't get worse Knock on wood, and throw salt for what that's worth Nothing's so bad it can't get worse Thought I'd remodel the kitchen, put a garden out back Had to replace the foundation ‘cause it's got three cracks Ain't nothing bad enough it can't get worse Light a candle in the dark to ward off a curse Nothing so bad it can't get worse Oh, it's bad, really bad (it can't get worse) Oh, it can always get worse (it can't get no worse) Oh, just watch it get worse (how could things get worse?) You're tempting fate with those words: Nothin' So Bad It Can't Get Worse You can pin your hopes on the next great dream The horrible truth is that ol' pendulum will swing It can always get worse, that's the thing Pray and quote your scriptures, chapter and verse Ain't nothing so bad it can't get worse Don't whistle in the wind or step on a crack Tap three times and don't look back Don't count your chickens before they're hatched Count your blessings every day but remember first Ain't nothin’ bad enough it can't get worse

THIS BEAUTIFUL WORLD Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI) and John Reischman (Badger Blue Music/BMI) At the end of the day when the light fades away And our faith in all goodness wears thin When we're losing hope And the darkness steals in There's a light that flickers out there The bravest light comes with prayer CHORUS I pray for patience, kindness, and an open heart Pray for compassion and love in my soul I pray for the strength to know my own weakness And I pray for this beautiful world Oh, I'll shine one light and you’ll shine one light And together we’ll light up the sky We’ll lift up each neighbor, it’s a promise we made And together we’ll learn to be brave A haven for those who need to be saved CHORUS I have a prayer that I whisper in the air "Please help me" on knees that are bent And "Thank you, thank you for lifting me up And saving my heart once again" I say that prayer over again CHORUS

All song notes by Kathy Kallick, except as noted.

Ride Away
Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI)
A rollicking bluegrass romp of a story song. It is not a story about an "anti-hero" or anybody with redeeming qualities. This is a story of a thoroughly evil guy.

Pockets Full of Rain
Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI)
That winter of 2017 was a killer dark season that brought everybody down so low. The only way to get through was to look for any ray of light.

(It’s a) Horrible World
Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI)
Thanks to NPR for finding the tiny, happy bits of news to offset the horror from time to time.

Cascade Blues
Michael J. Eisler (BMI)
Mike Eisler wrote this tune on the banjo when he was playing with the Sawtooth Mountain Boys, a band that traveled extensively through the Cascade Mountains, and I thought it would make a great fiddle number. Mike taught me some more cool tunes, and I stole his intro to one of them ‘cause it sounded so perfect for this one! (AS)

Dark As the Night, Blue As the Day
Bill Monroe (Songs Of Universal, Inc./BMI)
I learned this from the guy who made me want to sing bluegrass, Pat Enright. The blues is such an important part of bluegrass, and no one’s as bluesy as Bill Monroe — and Pat.

Solid Gone
(Public Domain)
Lesley Riddle wrote a song he called "The Cannonball Blues,” which was a variant of Charlie Poole's “White House Blues,” incorporating other songs of the era. Lesley was an African-American singer and guitarist who became a close associate of A.P. Carter, accompanying him on numerous “song-catching” trips throughout the Southeast, and is the one who taught Maybelle Carter several guitar techniques. Legend has it that Lesley traded the song’s rights to A.P. for a new prosthetic leg. David Holt says that Doc Watson collected the song from Inez Chandler of Sodom, NC, who called it "Solid Gone.” Ewan McVicar reported on mudcat that many singers in the UK learned the song from Ralph Rinzler, who provided the final two verses in this version. Whew, the folk process!

My Honey Lou
A.P. Carter (APRS/BMI)
This Carter Family song — actually written in 1897 by Frank M. Statia — came to us from Laurel Bliss and her love of the elusive unison notes in duet singing. It's a sweetie!

Boot Heel Drag
Herb Remington (Unichappell Music, Inc./BMI)
First released in 1950 by Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys. It’s said that Bob was jealous of his former steeler Leon Mcauliffe's 1949 hit record, “Panhandle Rag,” and told his new steel player, Herb Remington, “Write me a tune that’s better than ‘Panhandle Rag!’" I am fond of playing them both on the dobro. Having brought “Panhandle” to the KKB for our 2010 album, Between the Hollow and the High Rise, and hundreds of live performances, it made perfect sense to follow in Bob Wills’ footsteps with this tune. (GB)

The Sunday Road
Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI)
Thanks to Sally Truitt for her inspiring images, keen artistic eye, and generosity of spirit. She titled her photo “The Sunday Road,” and it sure told a story!

Cotton Eyed Joe
Trad., arr. Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI)
I learned this song from my mother, Dodi Kallick, a prominent folksinger in the 1950s-‘60s Chicago scene. When old recordings of her resurfaced, I discovered the melody I remembered my mom singing is actually the harmony I invented to sing with her! Who knew? I made up some new words, added a bridge, listened to old versions and pondered the story and its problems, and settled on this interpretation. Annie's fiddling reinvigorated the song for me.

Nothin' So Bad (It Can’t Get Worse)
Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI)
Terry Harris suggested the title, and, truthfully, the song wrote itself! It could have been silly fluff, but the band played such smart and sassy ensemble and solo parts that it's elevated to Awesome!

Edale
Tom Bekeny (BMI)
Inspired by playing the 1986 Edale Bluegrass Festival in a picturesque village in Derbyshire (UK), this tune was originally performed and recorded by the SF Bay Area band, Tenbrooks. (TB)

This Beautiful World
Kathy Kallick (Red Shirt Pub. Co./BMI) and John Reischman (Badger Blue Music/BMI)
When John Reischman brought me this gorgeous melody, it fit well with some lyrics that had been cooking. Nice to collaborate again with an old friend.
